Intel Computer

CPU comparison question?

My friends and I noticed that our sempron64 3400+ 754 (2.0 ghz) is outperforming our intel pentium 4s (3ghz and 3.2ghz) in games like C&C3, COH, WOW, NWN, and the like. All three are not oc'ed and carry 1.5gb ram, geforce 7600 gs', and 300gigs of memory. I mean we're playing on high settings and the intels usually experience slight chopiness when the screen gets crowded and busy with fighting. I know AMD is usually better in gaming than Intel but isnt a Sempron a value processor (or an athlon 64 lite) not on par with it and not meant to compete with it? Could anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

  1. AMD's processors are faster clock for clock than p4's...for years and years they have been saying that it's not about how fast your CPU spins (in Ghz) but how much work it does in the same amount of time... therefore, an AMD processor with a lower clock speed should be able to process more data...everything else being equal. secondly, p4's rely on hyperthreading...which is known to only work...well....in some situations....gaming is generally not one of them. so when tries to do this with an application that will not benifit from it...= choppy BTW: Intel knows that and that's why you'll never see it on any of their new cpu's...it's a great idea but it doesn't work. Third, your p4 has to make more trips to the L2 cashe, than an AMD, hence the p4 has to work harder to do the same amount of work = slower speeds.
  2. Sempron is the value processor for AMD right? Therefore, you should expect it a little slow..Is that pentium 4 HT enabled? High end AMDs could indeed faster, but for a sempron,i doubt it wont...But if you are really into gaming, why not try core2duo instead?
