Compare Intel Pentium M Processors with Pentium 4 processors?

Ive been looking hard around the net and have yet to see any comparison of desktop type pentium 4's with Pentium M and Core 2 processors. I know that looking at the clock speed alone is not enough to determine the performance of the computers as the pentium M processors have much more aggressive clock speeds. Can anyone here just.. give me the gist of what a Pentium M 1.86 Ghz processor with 2MB of L2 cache is comparable to with a desktop for Watching films and surfing the net. I'm looking to buy a laptop with 512mb of fast ram and built in intel graphics. Thanks

  1. You should be able to get the comparisions from the intel website - www.intel.com. Note that the Pentium M and the Pentium 4 (for desktops) are different class of chips so you may need to extract the data from the different locations within the site. Pentium M was designed for mobility - so there are some compromises. It has power management so speed can be reduced to conserve battery life. Also the form factor is smaller. I don't think any laptop can beat a desktop for performance for a given price. Your specs for the laptop should be sufficient for watching films and surfing. You may want to consider upping your RAM to 1G fto improve performance as this is the only upgrade possible. Be aware that when you run on battery power, you may get reduced performance when the CPU switched to lower speed. However you can force the laoptop to give max performance but this will be at the expense of a shorter battery life (the session not the life-span of the battery). Hope this helps...
