Intel Computer

mobile processor comparison, which is better,?

AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-58 operating at 1.9GHz or Intel Pentium dual-core processor T2310 operating at 1.46GHz ---- I understand that the ghz speed of 1.9 is faster than 1.4, but is the processor truly faster, or is the pentium a better/faster processor? The machines are laptops, and are virtually identical otherwise, any input is appreciated.

  1. AMD chips recently were blown away by the Intel's conroe processor for about a year, that the Intel T2310 is a yonah processor and is older and much slower. The new Turions draw very little heat (~33W) and are comparable to older Conroe T5xxx series but not the T7xxx series. That intel chip you listing is over 18 months old and won't last you a year. THe AMD is a better chip in this case. If you find a computer similar in price with an Intel Core 2 Duo that is 1.8Hz or more get that instead of the AMD even if its $100 more (not to be comfused with the T2xxx or Centrino Duo). If you can't afford it stick with the AMD.
  2. Based on the performance of mobile CPUs in testing by Tom's hardware, http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_mobile.html?model1=701&model2=704&chart=259 I'd estimate that the performance of those two CPUs is going to be nearly identical. The T2300 tested on Tom's hardware produced results barely above a Turion TL-56, so, given that both processors are incremental improvements on the tested CPUs, they should provide similar performance.
  3. Actually I would suggest the AMD in the two. In game performance tests, it seems that equivalent Intel processors outperform AMD ones by a margin of 5 to 10 percent. But since there is a huge speed difference between the two processors, I'd suggest the AMD, especially if the price is the same.
  4. The Core Duo T2310 is about 8% faster than the AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-58.
