Intel Core 2 vs AMD Phenom?

How do Intel Core 2 processors (Duo and Quad) perform in comparison to AMD Phenom (x3 and x4) processors? Do they give similar performance? Which one would you recommend AND WHY please? Your help is very much appreciated. Many thanks. Nick :) Thanks for all your advice, guys! Most seem to say Intel which is what I've heard elsewhere. Thank you everybody!

  1. Yea they probably give the same performance but id get core 2 duo cause i got one and it works awesome and AMDs are know to heat up faster in a shorter time span which is bad Lol. Yea get core 2 duo or quad. Good luck finding the right one.
  2. get the one that goes up to 11
  3. when it comes to performance the difference isnt noticeable but normally I'd choose Intel's because it's more efficient ad always gets the job done, the only mistake the Intel made was the celeron solo core
  4. The age old question, Intel or AMD. If you're just looking at processor to processor comparison, Intel puts out better numbers than AMD. An all around performance as a system whole, could be AMD to your specs whether you want Sli or crossfire for your video cards. Integrated graphics is owned by AMD right now. Processor to processor, majority of the benchmarks higher scores belong to intel.
  5. Intel Core 2 is better I am not very Happy with AMD of any kind specially when they became 64 bits most my applications and software did not work with AMD and I had to get a AMD 64 version of Windows xp and vista and some games for my Old pc even in my Linux machine I had to find AMD 64 bit version for it too..........
  6. I think AMD has elegantly designed the Phenom and I think that in every way, it stands head and shoulders with Intel Quad Core processors. As a matter of fact, AMD is a better processor for design reasons: AMD builds their quad core on a single die, instead of fusing two duo cores together and then sticking a Front Side Bus in between. AMD has no FSB because theirs is made with a single piece of silicon wafer. This reduces the temperature per core. WIthout the FSB, the AMD communicates with cache faster, requires less time per instruction set instruction execution. Intel will catch up here shortly with their Nehalem processor, yet to be released...but for now, AMD has them beat. You can find people in both camps (I am a neutralist...whatever works better is what I go for)...who will insist one way or the other...I say they work equally as well...and AMD might work just a bit better. Right now, there is little software that is truely multithreaded besides a few games and Microsoft Office 2007. However, with Quad, that is more future thinking than Duo, just realize that by the time you opt for a quad core, Intel will release the Nehalem and it will be 8 cores with the ability to emulate 8 more cores for a total of 16 cores. I am hoping that AMD will be able to step up to the bat and at least offer an 8/16 processor and I bet they are working on it! They are going to have to if they intend to survive. I think they will :) It doesn't matter how many cores you have if you cannot use them. Software development in multithreaded apps is what is holding things back. You could have a million cores, it wouldn't make a bit of difference, if the software is not designed to take advantage of them. I think at this point, that either you buy a quad core (because in the long run, two years down the road if you keep your computer, it will be better than a duo core) or wait for the Intel 8 core processor. Right now is sort of a limbo state, you are damned if you buy now and damned if you don't. My recommendation for an Intel Processor would be the Q6600. This is a very popular LGA775 socket processor used by a lot of gamers here with lots of success. My recommendation for an AMD Phenom X4 is the 9950 Quad Core processor. Watch out, 9950 is a little hot, 140 Watts, so you had better figure on investing some money in a good CPU cooler.
  7. it only matters for gamers and heavy duty defense system networks. it is like buying a bulldozer to do your garden. less is more.
