Intel Atom Processor VS Intel Pentium?
I have an intel pentium 2.6 ghz computer.. I'm thinking of replacing it since I've had it for three years and I use my laptop way way to rough.. wanted a cheap desktop replacement and I found Intel atom, 1.6 ghz processor. I wanna know the speed comparison between the old plain intel pentium and intel atom. Specifically, what would be the processing speed comparison between atom 1.6 and pentium 2.6? With all the dual core and core2duo stuff out nowadays I'm guessing the atom 1.6 must be better than the old pentium 1.6 processor...

- Actually your 2.6 Pentium will destroy the Atom. A 1.86 Atom isn't much faster than a 1GHz Pentium M. Atoms are basically designed for low power comsumption, not performance, with the 1.86 Atom only using 2.4 watts. You can read that here, which is just one page of an article describing the atom in depth. - Intel Atoms are a new type of low power laptops(called Netbooks) designed to give off enough procesisng power to write a small essay and browse the web. They were specifiaclally built for Netbook's and arent designed for desktops. Intel Pentiums are for desktop PC's. The proper replacment of a Pentium would be a Core 2, jsut make sure your MoBo supports it, some older Pentium PC's cant support Core 2.
- The atom processor was really made for mini mobile computing - such as the Asus EEE. That Atom will not work on your motherboard.
- atom series is for low power basic use mini laptops.. speed wise pentium is superior but for specific use as mini laptop where battery life is more imp than speed to load a webpage atom is better...
- Atom is slower than your pentium 2.6ghz, Atom is designed specifically for nettops, which are cheap desktops built primarily for web surfing, email, and basic internet usage. If you buy a new laptop, buy one powered by a dual core processor like core2duo.
